Nature.com: „Extremotolerant tardigrade genome and improved radiotolerance of human cultured cells by tardigrade-unique protein. (…) Using human cultured cells, we demonstrate that a tardigrade-unique DNA-associating protein suppresses X-ray-induced DNA damage by ∼40% and improves radiotolerance. These findings indicate the relevance of tardigrade-unique proteins to tolerability and tardigrades could be a bountiful source of new protection genes and mechanisms.“

Das Bärtierchen (engl. Tardigrade) ist ein Superheld: „Tardigrades are pretty much impossible to kill. No, seriously – the tiny organisms also known as water bears or mossy piglets can survive the following environments: the vacuum of outer space, near absolute zero, boiling temperatures, pressures six times greater than the deepest ocean, several years’ worth of dehydration, and radiation lethal to pretty much every other animal on Earth. Da denke ich an die Bibel, Matthäus 18, Vers 7: „In jener Stunde kamen die Jünger zu Jesus und fragten: Wer ist denn im Himmelreich der Größte? Da rief er ein Bärtierchen herbei, stellte es in ihre Mitte und sagte: Amen, ich sage euch: Wenn ihr nicht umkehrt und werdet wie die Bärtierchen, werdet ihr nicht in das Himmelreich hineinkommen. Wer sich so klein macht wie dieses Bärtierchen, der ist im Himmelreich der Größte.“
